Stay safe at GMW storages over Labour Day long weekend
Friday 6 March, 2026
Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) is reminding community members to stay safe and follow the rules when visiting its lakes, dams and reservoirs over the Labour Day long weekend.
According to Life Saving Victoria (LSV), 35 people have drowned in Victorian waterways this financial year so far, and drowning rates roughly double on public holidays.
LSV General Manager - Aquatic Capability Andy Dennis urged the community to stay safe around inland waterways.
"Check conditions before entering the water and be mindful of slippery or unstable edges. Ensure children are supervised at all times, always swim with a mate, wear a lifejacket when using watercraft, and avoid alcohol and drugs around water," Mr Dennis said.
"These simple steps can save lives."
GMW General Manager Water Storage Services Jon McKeown said even though the busy summer visitation period was now over it was important that visitors stayed safe at GMW storages.
He said that included never swimming or boating alone, wearing a lifejacket out on the water and always staying clear of weirs and regulators.
"It's also important that visitors know which storages allow water vessel use and the rules around using vessels," he said.
"Vessel operators should always stick to the speed limits within certain distances from the shore.
"That includes obeying a five-knot speed limit at any water level within 50 metres of the water's edge unless otherwise indicated."
GMW is also reminding visitors to check their water vessels properly before heading out on the water.
Mr McKeown said visitors should ensure their vessels are well maintained and have all the required safety equipment when they take them out to storages where vessels can be operated.
"Visitors should also be aware that, per regulatory rules, only one person is allowed inside a water vessel while it's being refuelled and when it's restarting," he said.
"We have seen some recent incidents where vessels in need of maintenance have caused safety issues out on the water. The same goes for individuals not adhering to rules around refuelling and restarting vessels.
"Please stay safe and follow the rules when out at the storages.
"We want people to enjoy their time out on the water. Being aware of safety risks, and knowing what the recreational rules are, is key to that."
