Water security, the Murray-Darling Basin Plan Review, and the critical role of irrigation in northern Victoria were key issues raised at last week's Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) Customer Committee Summit.

The Summit, held on June 9 in Kialla, brought together members of GMW's seven Customer Committees with Board Directors and staff, to share firsthand insights and help shape future priorities.

Customers identified water security as a key concern, particularly in the context of drier conditions and reduced inflows. There was also strong interest in the Murray-Darling Basin Plan Review, with support for GMW continuing its advocacy ahead of the Commonwealth's Water Act review.

Committee members emphasised the importance of water availability to support agriculture, food production, and the long-term strength of regional communities. They also highlighted the need to work closely with local government on land use planning to ensure water and infrastructure are directed where they deliver the greatest value.

The Summit also provided early input into GMW's 2028 Price Submission, helping shape future service priorities and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and transparency.

GMW Chair Justin Hanney said customer input was critical to responding to changes in the water sector.

"Customer Committees give us a direct line of sight to what's happening on the ground and where the pressure points are for customers and communities," Mr Hanney said.

"The Summit was an excellent way to bring together GMW's 60 plus Customer Committee members from across the region to present their experiences and views.

"This kind of direct input is essential. It shapes our priorities and how we deliver services.

"The Summit allowed GMW Board Directors and the Executive to listen, consider and discuss important matters with committee members. It was also a great opportunity to have incoming Managing Director Steve Capewell in attendance, ahead of his official start with GMW in July. "

The event was held at the Woolshed @ Emerald Bank in Kialla and it was noted by attendees how great a venue it was for open discussion and connection."

Attendees also heard from speakers from DEECA, Agriculture Victoria, and GMW on seasonal outlooks, water availability, policy reform, and future water market demand.
