Council connects students with career opportunities

Secondary college students from across the Gannawarra were able to learn about local career opportunities thanks to a Gannawarra Shire Council and Murray Mallee Local Learning and Employment Network-organised event.

More than 130 people attended the Grow Your Own Careers Expo, held at The Glasshouse, Kerang on Friday, 31 July.

The event enabled students from Cohuna Secondary College, Kerang Christian College and Kerang Technical High School to connect with employers, training providers and industries as part of efforts to showcase local career pathways and help develop the Gannawarra's future workforce.

"The Grow Your Own Careers Expo enabled our young people to see that there are various career opportunities locally," Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.

"The expo provided direct access to employers, apprenticeships, tertiary education providers and training organisations, helping students make informed decisions about their future."

Around 15 exhibitors took part in the expo, including local manufacturers, health and community service providers, Council departments, renewable energy and mining projects, and tertiary education providers.

"Having a breadth of providers and employers in attendance ensured this inaugural event was a success, which we hope will grow the workforce available for Gannawarra-based businesses and industries," Mr Rollinson said.

"Council thanks all who played a role in this event, which demonstrated what can be achieved when schools, industry, training providers and Council work together to support our next generation of industry leaders."
