Minyip Recreation Reserve Sports Lighting Project Complete

Yarriambiack Shire Council is pleased to announce the completion of the Minyip Recreation Reserve Sports Lighting Upgrade Project, delivering a significant improvement to one of the district's most important sporting and community facilities.

The project has transformed the main oval through the installation of new energy-efficient LED sports lighting, providing lighting levels of 200 LUX LED for Australian Rules Football. The upgrade includes the installation of four new lighting towers, replacing ageing and inadequate infrastructure and creating a safer, more accessible environment for training, recreation and community events.

Mayor Andrew McLean said the project represents a major investment in the future of community sport in Minyip.

"This project is about much more than new lights. It is about ensuring local sporting clubs, volunteers and community members have access to high-quality facilities that support participation, inclusion and community wellbeing for many years to come."

Mayor Andrew McLean said the upgraded lighting will provide greater flexibility for clubs and community groups using the reserve.

"The new lighting will allow increased evening and twilight use of the facility, creating more opportunities for training, competition and community activities.

The Minyip Recreation Reserve Sports Lighting Upgrade Project was identified as a priority through several strategic planning documents, including the Minyip Community Action Plan, Yarriambiack Shire Council's Sport and Recreation Strategy and the Minyip Recreation Reserve Masterplan. These plans highlighted the need to improve lighting infrastructure to support the ongoing viability of sport and recreation in the town.

Mayor Andrew McLean acknowledged the strong collaboration between Council, funding partners and local stakeholders.

"Projects like this are only possible through strong partnerships. I thank the Victorian Government, the Minyip Recreation Reserve Committee, the Minyip-Murtoa Football Netball Club and everyone involved in advocating for and delivering this important community project."

Background

The Minyip Recreation Reserve Sports Lighting Upgrade Project was supported through the Victorian Government's Country Football and Netball Program, delivered in partnership with AFL Victoria and Netball Victoria. Council successfully secured funding to undertake the project, which was designed to address ageing and non-compliant lighting infrastructure and improve safety, accessibility and participation opportunities at the reserve.

Key works completed as part of the project include:

Installation of new LED sports lighting on the main oval.

Installation of four new lighting towers.

Delivery of lighting to a standard of 200 lux to support football training and competition activities.

Replacement of ageing lighting infrastructure with more energy-efficient technology, reducing future maintenance requirements and operating costs.

Improved accessibility, safety and participation opportunities for the broader community.

The completed project ensures the Minyip Recreation Reserve remains a vibrant community hub and strengthens the long-term sustainability of sport and recreation opportunities across the Minyip district.
