Free green waste weekend returns

It's time to clear out the garden before the warmer weather arrives, with Swan Hill Rural City Council's free green waste weekend returning this spring.

Residents can dispose of green waste free of charge at the Swan Hill Landfill on Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November, and at the Robinvale Landfill on Sunday 1 November.

Mayor Cr Stuart King said the weekend was a practical way for Council to help residents prepare their properties for summer.

"This is a good opportunity to clear out the garden, cut back overgrown vegetation and get on top of those jobs around the yard before summer arrives.

"We know there's often quite a bit to clean up at this time of year, so being able to take your green waste to the landfill for free makes that job a little easier," Cr King said.

Council's Director Infrastructure Leah Johnston said the initiative also encouraged residents to think about fire preparedness.

"Pruning back trees and clearing long grass and excess vegetation around our properties is an important part of preparing for the fire season.

"Keeping green waste out of general landfill also means it can be put to better use. The material we collect is mulched and reused as garden cover around the municipality," Ms Johnston said.

Materials accepted during the free weekend include small tree pruning's and branches up to 75mm in diameter, garden clippings, grass, leaves, weeds and hedge trimmings.

Mulch produced from green waste is also available for residents to self-load free of charge.

The free green waste weekend is for residents of the Swan Hill Rural City Council municipality only and residential volume limits apply. Commercially generated green waste will incur normal gate fees.
