Celebrate Walk Safely to School Day on Friday, 22 May

Children across the Gannawarra are encouraged to walk to and from school or their school bus pick-up point on Friday, 22 May as part of National Walk Safely to School Day celebrations.

Now in its 27

th

year, this Pedestrian Council Australia initiative aims to promote safe pedestrian behaviour and the health benefits associated with walking, cycling or using a scooter to travel to and from school.

"Schools across the Gannawarra are renowned for promoting the benefits associated with walking, cycling or using a scooter to travel to and from school," Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.

"Walk Safely to School Day enhances this message by reminding children, families and motorists of the importance of road and pedestrian safety around our schools throughout the year."

Schools can take part by visiting

and incorporate some of the activities outlined for Friday, 22 May.

Parents and guardians who drive their children to school or the school bus are encouraged to support their children to walk, ride or scoot to school on the day and talking to their children about being safe on the roads and footpaths.

"We all play a role in promoting pedestrian safety, whether it is being mindful when driving or educating children about road safety by demonstrating how to Stop, Look, Listen and Think whilst out in the community," Mr Rollinson said.
