Gannawarra Resource Recovery and Waste Management Strategy adopted

Gannawarra Shire Council's efforts to improve waste management and drive greater resource recovery across the municipality will be guided by a new strategy.

Adopted at Council's June 2026 meeting, the

Gannawarra Shire Council Resource Recovery and Waste Management Strategy 2026-2036

focuses on Council's waste and recycling facilities and services, including how to continually improve the delivery of these services.

Key features of the strategy include:

An emphasis on education residents and businesses regarding correctly disposing of waste, as well as any changes to kerbside services.

Pursuing partnerships with neighbouring councils and regional groups to share resources, attract funding, and address cross-boundary waste challenges.

Building staff knowledge of circular economy principles and review procurement policies to support waste avoidance and green purchasing.

Conducting regular reviews of waste services and infrastructure.

"The

is a 10-year plan that focuses on Council's waste and recycling facilities and services, including how to continually improve the delivery of these services for the Gannawarra community," Mayor Garner Smith said.

"Waste management is an important issue for our residents, especially as councils try to navigate changes to household waste recycling services. With this in mind, this strategy aims to meet the needs of residents, businesses and the broader community, while remaining cost effective and future focused."

Residents and other stakeholders were able to provide feedback regarding the draft version of the strategy during February and March 2026. Two responses were received, focusing on concerns regarding the costs associated with additional kerbside bin services, and bin service design suitability for different household types.

"This feedback is consistent with typical community concerns associated with waste service changes, particularly in relation to cost and service suitability," Mayor Smith said.

"These matters are already addressed within the Strategy through its staged implementation approach, commitment to community education, and ongoing service review."
